TRIBE Freedom Foundation supports the survivors of modern slavery and exploitation, working with frontline project partners to help survivors to overcome their previous experiences and regain their independence. We are on a mission to fight modern slavery and end human trafficking.
One area which resonates particularly strongly with us is the positive impact which can be gained through physical activity and outdoor adventure. (In 2018, we established the TRIBE x Unseen Gym for survivors.) There are many physical and psychological benefits to both physical activity and outdoor adventures. However, for the survivors we work with there are lots of barriers to getting out into nature such as lack of finances, appropriate equipment or clothing, confidence and knowledge.
This is why we’re supporting a new project, the HBF x TRIBE Hike for Freedom campaign! Working with The Helen Bamber Foundation, who support survivors of trafficking and extreme human cruelty, we will help to deliver a series of monthly training walks and adventure training sessions, gradually leading up to the incredible challenge of climbing the three highest peaks in the UK this summer.
So far, the women have taken part in monthly walks since November, from Epping Forest to Box Hill and the Chilterns. Each month, the women have grown in confidence, strength and excitement for the final challenge!
One aspect of integration that many survivors find challenging is looking after their health and wellbeing. They are often told by their doctors or therapists that exercise and getting outdoors would be good for their mental and physical health, but many have been reluctant to go out walking on their own due to being afraid, having nobody to go with, lacking confidence, and not knowing where to go.
The Hike for Freedom project promises to have a huge impact on these women’s lives, increasing confidence, developing leadership and outdoor skills, and reducing loneliness and isolation.
We look forward to updating you with the women’s progress over the course of the year!
